The Bahamas is one of the most popular cruise destinations, especially for cruises departing from Florida. With bright blue water, beaches, snorkeling, shopping, and cruise line private destinations, a Bahamas cruise can be an easy way to get a taste of the Caribbean without traveling very far.

Depending on your itinerary, you may visit Nassau, Bimini, Freeport, or one of several private islands and destinations operated by cruise lines.

Nassau

Nassau, located on New Providence Island, is the capital of the Bahamas and one of its busiest cruise ports.

Ships dock close to downtown, making this one of the easier ports to explore without immediately arranging transportation.

From the cruise port area, you can head into downtown Nassau for shopping, restaurants, historic sites, or arrange transportation to beaches and attractions elsewhere on the island.

Bimini

Bimini is a collection of small islands in the western Bahamas and is much closer to Florida than many travelers realize.

A day here tends to be more about beaches and the water than exploring a large city. Depending on where your ship docks and what you want to do, you may use local transportation or a shuttle to reach beaches and other parts of the island.

Bimini can be a good port for a relatively simple day if your main goal is enjoying the water.

Freeport and Grand Bahama Island

Cruises visiting Grand Bahama typically use the Freeport area.

Unlike Nassau, many of the places visitors want to see aren't immediately outside the cruise terminal. If you want to visit beaches, attractions, or other parts of Grand Bahama, plan for transportation.

This is a port where deciding what you want to do before getting off the ship can make the day easier.

Cruise Line Private Islands and Destinations

Some Bahamas itineraries include private islands or private destinations developed for cruise passengers.

Depending on the cruise line, you might encounter destinations such as Perfect Day at CocoCay, Castaway Cay, Great Stirrup Cay, Half Moon Cay, or Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve.

These stops are generally designed to make having a beach day relatively easy. Depending on the destination, you may find included beaches and food along with optional activities, rentals, cabanas, water attractions, or upgraded areas.

Spend the Day at the Beach

If you're cruising to the Bahamas, there's a good chance the water is part of the reason you chose it.

Beach options range from easily accessible public beaches to resorts and beach clubs offering day passes.

Before choosing one, consider how far it is from the ship, what amenities are available, transportation costs, and how much time you'll realistically have there.

Get Out on the Water

Snorkeling, boating, kayaking, fishing, and other water activities are common choices throughout the Bahamas.

Some excursions combine several activities into one trip, while others are essentially transportation to a beach or snorkeling location.

You can book through the cruise line or explore other options independently. Either way, leave enough time to get back to the ship.

Explore Beyond the Beach

The Bahamas isn't only about beaches.

In Nassau, you can explore historic buildings, local food, markets, museums, and other pieces of Bahamian culture. Other islands offer their own communities, landscapes, and experiences.

If you've visited the Bahamas before, spending less time at a resort and exploring more of the destination can make a repeat visit feel completely different.

How Long Are You Actually in Port?

A cruise itinerary may show that your ship is in the Bahamas for most of the day, but that doesn't mean every minute is available for exploring.

You'll need time to get off the ship, travel to wherever you're going, return to the port, and be back onboard before the deadline.

Check your ship's all-aboard time, not just its scheduled departure time.
