Do I have to book a shore excursion?
No. You can book an organized excursion, explore independently, or stay onboard the ship. Your options will depend on the port, transportation available, how much time you have, and what you want to do.
Can I just walk off the ship and explore?
At some ports, yes. Ships may dock within walking distance of shops, restaurants, beaches, and attractions. At other ports, you'll need transportation to reach the main destination. Check the specific port before deciding.
What's the difference between a dock and a tender port?
At a dock, the ship pulls alongside a pier and passengers walk directly ashore. At a tender port, the ship anchors offshore and smaller boats transport passengers between the ship and land.
Will the cruise ship wait if I'm late getting back?
Generally, you are responsible for returning before the ship's scheduled departure. Cruise-line-sponsored excursions that are delayed are handled differently, but passengers exploring independently should not assume the ship will wait.
How early should I return to the ship?
Your cruise line will provide an all-aboard time, which is earlier than the ship's departure time. Plan to return comfortably before that deadline rather than cutting it close.
Do I need local currency in cruise ports?
It depends on the destination. Credit cards and U.S. dollars may be widely accepted in some ports, while local currency is more useful or necessary in others. Research each destination before you arrive.
What should I take with me when I leave the ship?
