Frequently asked questions
Do I need a passport for a cruise?
It depends on your itinerary. Some closed-loop cruises that begin and end at the same U.S. port may allow U.S. citizens to travel with other approved documents. A passport is required for many international itineraries and is generally the safest travel document to have. Always check the requirements for your specific cruise and destinations.
Can I bring drinks onboard?
Each cruise line has its own beverage policy. Some allow passengers to bring a limited amount of bottled water, soda, or wine, while others restrict outside beverages. Check your cruise line’s current policy before packing drinks
What's included in my cruise fare?
Most cruise fares include your cabin, meals in select dining venues, entertainment, onboard activities, and access to many ship amenities. Specialty dining, alcoholic beverages, Wi-Fi, shore excursions, gratuities, and certain activities may cost extra. What’s included varies by cruise line and fare type.
Do I have to pay gratuities?
Most cruise lines charge daily gratuities or service charges that are distributed among crew members. They may be prepaid or added to your onboard account during the cruise. Policies and amounts vary by cruise line, so check the terms for your sailing.
How does cruise dining work?
Cruise ships usually offer several dining options, including a main dining room, buffet, casual restaurants, and specialty restaurants. Some dining is included in your fare, while other restaurants charge extra. Depending on the cruise line, you may have a set dining time or choose when you want to eat
Is Wi-Fi available on cruises?
Most modern cruise ships offer Wi-Fi, usually through paid internet packages, although some fares include it. Speed, pricing, device limits, and availability vary by cruise line and ship, and connectivity can be affected by the ship’s location.
What is a muster drill?
A muster drill is a required safety procedure that teaches passengers where to go and what to do in an emergency. Depending on the cruise line, you may complete part of the process through the cruise line’s app before visiting your assigned muster station.
What happens if I miss the ship?
If you miss the ship at embarkation or while visiting a port, the ship generally will not wait for you. You may be responsible for arranging and paying for transportation to the next port where you can legally rejoin the cruise. Cruise-line-sponsored excursions may receive additional assistance if a delay causes them to return late.
