Your cruise cabin is your home at sea, but choosing one isn't always as simple as picking the cheapest room.

Here's a basic look at the most common cabin categories.

Interior Cabins

Interior cabins generally don't have a window or exterior view. They're often among the least expensive options and can work well for travelers who don't plan to spend much time in their cabin.

Ocean-View Cabins

Ocean-view cabins have a window or porthole providing an exterior view. The window typically doesn't open, and its size can vary considerably.

Balcony Cabins

Balcony cabins include a private outdoor space. Balcony sizes and views vary, and some ships offer specialty balcony categories overlooking interior areas rather than the ocean.

Suites

Suites generally provide more space and may include separate living areas, larger balconies, upgraded bathrooms, or additional amenities.

Some cruise lines also provide suite guests with special restaurants, lounges, priority services, or other benefits.

Cabin Location Matters

Don't choose based only on category.

Look at the ship's deck plan and check what's above, below, and around your cabin.

Consider proximity to elevators, restaurants, pools, theaters, kids' areas, and nightlife. Travelers concerned about motion may also want to research which areas of the ship tend to experience less movement.

What About Obstructed Views?

Some ocean-view and balcony cabins have lifeboats, ship structures, or other objects partially blocking the view.

These cabins can sometimes cost less, but check how obstructed the view actually is before choosing one.

CABIN TIP: Two cabins labeled “balcony” can offer very different experiences. Compare the location, size, view, and specific cabin details—not just the category name.
