One thing to know before you get off the ship: Cozumel has three main cruise terminals, and where you dock can make a difference in how you plan your day.

Where Cruise Ships Dock in Cozumel

The three main cruise terminals are Punta Langosta, International Cruise Terminal, and Puerta Maya.

Punta Langosta is closest to downtown San Miguel. If you dock here, exploring downtown on foot is easy.

International Cruise Terminal is south of downtown. You'll probably want a taxi if San Miguel is part of your plans.

Puerta Maya is also south of downtown and has its own large cruise complex with shops, restaurants, and shore-excursion facilities.

Check your cruise line's app or daily information so you know exactly where your ship will be.

Getting Around Cozumel

Taxis are one of the easiest ways to get around the island and are available at the cruise terminals.

If you're heading to a beach, beach club, attraction, or downtown from one of the southern terminals, a taxi will usually be the simplest option.

Before leaving the terminal, look for posted taxi information and confirm your fare before your ride.

Spend the Day at the Beach

Cozumel is surrounded by beautiful Caribbean water, so it's no surprise that beach days are popular here.

You'll find both public beach areas and beach clubs around the island. Beach clubs can range from simple places to swim and eat to larger properties offering pools, loungers, water activities, food, and drinks.

Check what's included before purchasing a day pass since amenities vary.

Go Snorkeling or Diving

Cozumel is particularly well known for its reefs and underwater activities. The island offers snorkeling and diving opportunities along with other water-based excursions.

You don't necessarily have to be an experienced diver to enjoy the water. Snorkeling excursions can be an easier way to get a look below the surface.

If this is high on your list, compare excursion locations and transportation time from your particular cruise terminal.

Explore San Miguel

San Miguel is Cozumel's main town and a good option if you want to spend part of your port day walking around instead of committing to a full excursion.

You'll find shops, restaurants, waterfront views, and places to stop for a drink or something to eat.

If you're docked at Punta Langosta, downtown is particularly convenient. From International or Puerta Maya, plan on transportation.

See More of the Island

The cruise terminal is only a small piece of Cozumel.

You can also find cultural sites, natural areas, beaches, reefs, and quieter parts of the island away from the busiest cruise areas. Cozumel's tourism office highlights beaches, ecotourism, Maya culture, food, and outdoor adventures among the island's major experiences.

A tour can make exploring farther from the port easier, but independent travelers can also use taxis or arrange transportation.

Take the Ferry to Playa del Carmen?

Passenger ferries connect Cozumel with Playa del Carmen on the mainland, but this adds another transportation step to a limited cruise port day.

If you're considering an excursion on the mainland, pay close attention to ferry schedules, travel time, and your ship's all-aboard time.

For many first-time visitors, there's already plenty to do without leaving Cozumel.

Don't Forget Your Ship's Time

Before heading out, know your all-aboard time and whether the time shown locally matches the time your ship is using.

Give yourself plenty of time to return to the correct terminal. This is especially important if you're exploring independently.

Check which terminal you're using before planning your Cozumel day. Punta Langosta makes downtown especially easy, while International and Puerta Maya are better treated as starting points for taxis, beaches, and excursions.
